Picking out a rug can be a difficult task if you don't know what to look for. Texture, color, pile and size all play a large role in making your space look welcoming and complete.

Living Room:

The Bigger the better! The bigger the rug the bigger it will make the room feel. Rugs are an anchor for the room meaning it anchors all of the furniture instead of having the furniture look like it is "floating." For a rule of thumb at least 2 front legs of each piece of furniture should be on the rug, creating a cohesive look. Styling your rug in a living room: Center on any major architectural element. For example A fireplace or windows.

Bedroom:

To have a completed look in a bedroom the are rug should be large enough that it extends to both sides of the bed evenly. The area rug should be half way under the bed & 8" from night stands to beginning of rug. (For sizing: Queen Beds= 8x10 rug King Beds= 9x12)

Dining:

For the Dining Room you want to choose a rug that is large enough that sits the table + chairs comfortably even when the chairs are pulled out. You do not want the chairs to fall off the carpet when pulled out. Choose a flat rug or low pile rug because they are easier to clean. Typical sizes: 6x9, 8x10, 9x12

Runners + narrow rugs direct the eye down hallways or connecting areas. This is a great area to add color or a fun pattern since this will most likely be the first space people will see in your home, have fun with it! Tip: leave 1-2 feet on each side of the rug, this will help the entry way feel complete and not congested.

Room Size vs. Rug Size:

6'x9' Room - 7'x10' Rug

9'x11'- 10'x12' Room- 8'x10' Rug

10'x13'-11'x14' Room - 9'x12' Rug

11'x16'-12'x17' Room-12'x14' Rug

Tips:

Layering

To add extra interest you can layer your area rugs. A few popular ways to accomplish this look is to have a woven/jute rug on the bottom with an animal hide on top or use a geometric shaped rug on bottom with a round rug on top.

Patterns, Colors, Texture:

Rugs are a great place to add both color + pattern. The color of the rug should play into the color scheme of the room. If the room is all neutrals you can easily choose any color that suites your taste. Patterns can be tricky, have fun with it but try not too have too many patterns in one room this can cause chaos + easily ruin the design. Textured rugs are so much fun and can bring a space to life, there are so many great options for textured rugs such as jute or woven rugs that can enhance the room.

Types of Rugs:

Cotton: Dyes easily. Braided, Flat, or Weave. Very durable + often machine washable. One og the more affordable types of rugs

Olefin: Most popular manufactured fiber used in rugs. Soft, stain resistant + holds color well. Affordable.

Wool: Durable, good for high traffic areas. Repels liquids. A little more costly.

Jute/Sisal: Durable + has great texture. Absorbs moisture + difficult to remove stains from.

Nylon: Limitless colors. Resists dirt + crumbs. Easily cleaned but can fade over time.

Although these are just a few types of rugs it is good to do research before buying an area rug to make sure it would be a good fit in your space. Area rugs can add so much warmth and depth to your home + knowing how to select + style them is so important.
