Many people designing their kitchens don't come in aware that there are different styles of doors that really play into the look you are trying to achieve. Below I am going to explain the difference between a Traditional overlay, Full overlay and Inset cabinet styles.
Traditional Overlay
Traditional overlay doors do not cover the whole frame of the cabinet, instead you can see some of the frame around each cabinet. It does not change the inside dimension of the actual cabinet but as the name reveals, it is a more traditional look as seen below.
You can still get different door styles itself like a shaker or raised panel door but the overall look will be a little different than Full over lay doors.
I personally prefer these in bathrooms since most of the time cabinetry will be below the waist and harder to tell the difference. You will notice it more in a kitchen.

Full Overlay
The most popular style I've seen people lean towards. The full over lay style allows for the door to cover the full frame leaving less rail visible between cabinets. Again, you can get the same style doors in the traditional or full over lay.

Inset Style
Inset doors are gorgeous and have plagued Pinterest for inspiration photos. These doors a typically more on the costly side and take a lot more time a precision to make sure each door/drawer lays in the cabinet just right. This style has the cabinet or drawer fit inside the cabinet frame instead of overlapping the frame like the other two styles.
