Rule of 3's:
The rule of 3's is good for any decorating. This means that things in odd numbers or 3's is more attractive than an even number of items. Groups of 3 items such as glass decorative bottles can be grouped together or split up on the same bookshelf. This allows the eye to travel around the whole bookshelf instead of just one spot.

3 different size items that are similar/the same gives dimensions
Staggering Heights of items gives interest & variety
Similar items that are on different shelves should be placed as to make a triangle
Items to Use:
Here are a few ideas on what to decorate your shelves with:
+ Books-Use the binding for color/texture or allow the page side to show to contribute neutrals and texture. Don't be afraid to stack horizontally.
+ Plants ( a good place to add nature and possibly a cute planter)
+ Glass bottles, Jars, Vases
+ Decorative trays (metal, woven, etc.)-Adds interest, texture, & color
+ Bowls
+ Photos/Art
+ Organic items
+ Decorative Boxes
+ Cute Bookends
+ Mirrors
+ Keepsakes- this is a great way to show who you are and your personality through decorating

Tips/Things to think about:
How to Begin?
Choose a color palette
Take note of what items you have that you may want to use
Look online for inspiration
Start with bulky items then use books as fillers
Decide if you need more color, texture, contrast or different height or sized items
Texture: Think about items that will bring texture to the space. Texture adds interest that will pull the eye in. Ways to incorporate texture are woven items, wood, metals, plants, ceramics, fabric and so much more!
Empty Space is OK: Having negative space avoids the look of being over cluttered. The eye will flow better around bookshelves that are not overwhelmed by too many items. If there is too many items on the shelves the decor can actually have a negative effect on the space.

Layering:
Tall items should be placed towards the back of the shelf while the smaller items are brought to the front
Layering items help the flow of the decor
Not all items need to be completely seen. Some can be hidden partially behind another item
Contrast:
Having a mix of dark and light objects creates dimensions
The shelves won't be flat looking when contrast is applied
Let decorating be fun & a reflection of who you are! This is sure to add so much to your home and be inviting/ inspiring to others.
